Mask Making at Te Atatū Food Truck Fridays

2 February
4.30pm – 8.30pm
Te Atatu South Community Centre

With pre-columbian origins, the mask has always been a constant element present in different Latin American cultures. Join Sur-collective in a DIY/Creative Lab where you will explore the potential of the mask by creating your own.

About

Sur-collective was founded in 2021 by six latina artists out of the need to create a sense of place and redefine the space they use as migrant women in Aotearoa. They think of art as a tool to create new experiences, connect with other communities, and collaborate in the construction of diverse and inclusive spaces. This activity is open to all participants (kids must be supervised) and no previous experience is required.

This Room is an Island

This Room is an Island is a fully interactive, inhabitable world retold by a displaced daughter in another home.

Through dance and digital innovation, Yin-Chi Lee and collaborators create a multimedia experience: a space-within-space built by two generations’ memories of belonging and not belonging to the same world(s). The audience are guided through by performers to become an integral part of the narrative and the visual world.

Born amidst the threats of war, This Room is an Island is a living memory held together by both fear and love. It is the enduring mistakes of the past that echo into our future. It’s an invitation to reflect on our own histories and to re-discover our places in the ever-evolving landscape of human experience.

This piece involves audience interaction and participation. You can purchase tickets to observe as a seated audience member with no interaction, or choose to experience the work from within. Should you require assistance during the performance, our safety staff are present to discreetly guide you out and back in at your convenience.

Crescendo – Play your Part

At Crescendo Trust, they believe in the power of people and music to connect and change lives. Based in Avondale, Auckland Crescendo runs music mentoring workshops for vulnerable young Kiwis that may not fit into traditional education or career pathways. Run by practicing NZ musicians including Dave Atail (Nesian Mystik), Solomon Crook and Lomez Brown, the workshops focus on teaching both songwriting, recording and audio as well as transferable skills like communication, collaboration and teamwork.

This May, for NZ Music Month, Crescendo is raising money and awareness to continue providing meaningful pathways into music and audio careers for youth 15-24.

The pandemic has caused a massive disruption to schooling, particularly in the final years of high school when youth are making career and education choices and we know many youth have left school to earn money for their families as the cost of living has risen. This has caused an increased demand for their mentoring programmes.

Crescendo Trust are unable to meet the demand without your support. Which is why, this May Crescendo is asking Kiwis to ‘Play Your Part’

Play your part … to help youth thrive
Play your part … to inspire the next generation of musicians
Play your part … to help turn lives around
What part will you play?

Aside from making a donation, there are many ways Kiwis can play their part in May including buying a tshirt, entering a songwriting competition, joining online panel discussions about entering the music industry and watching a live-stream concert with Crescendo student graduates
