The Colombian Dance group is a local group bringing the Colombian culture to the community through dance and music. With over 18 members and growing and coming the majority coming from South America (Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina). The group have been invited to perform at the Te Atatu South Community Centre on 26th November this year.
“The idea of the creation of the dance group started because, like every other person, we needed to connect with our roots and culture, especially when we are far from home. All this helps the community with physical and mental care and also builds discipline.” – Diana Prieto.
Diana Prieto was born in the city of Bogotá (Colombia). Diana is a woman with a passion for dance from a young age. After much work and planning, the distance from Colombia and the desire to continue dancing saw Diana establish the Colombian folk dance group “Tierra Viva” in 2018. Diana is an ambassador of Latin American culture abroad and belongs to different organizations that promote diversity and inclusion. Examples are NZAA (New Zealand Asian Association), Auckland Multicultural Society, and NZCW (National Council of Women of New Zealand). Diana has also participated in research groups with (Aotearoa Latin American community) ALACINC, and Ethnic Communities in Auckland.
