Printmaking – A Workshop Series for local ethnic youth Creator Artform

This project will provide beginner printmaking workshops to ethnic youth in Henderson-Massey. These workshops will be a vehicle to connect ethnic youth to a unique creative practice through hands-on learning.

The workshops will be 6 consecutive 4 hour sessions starting in February 2025.

This workshop series is specifically targeting youth from MELAA backgrounds because access to creative arts opportunities are not often targeted towards this demographic in Aotearoa. The creators of the project are professional creatives who want to introduce their communities to a creative career pathway that they may otherwise not be exposed to in their daily life.

Print-making is growing in popularity with an annual printmaking festival called Printopia that has attracted hundreds of visitors to Henderson over the last three years. It’s also an art form that has a sustainability element where we will encourage our participants to bring clothes from home to print on or choose from thrifted items that we provide for them.

WORKSHOPS:

  • Selecting Garments to upcycle & Artwork (from selection)
  • Printing and placement. (demonstration + experimentation)
  • Heat setting + mini photoshoot (garment care + visual identity)
  • These workshops are suited to rangatahi/youth aged 16 – 25 from African, Middle Eastern, South American and Asian ethnic backgrounds (MELAA).
