Kōpū is an innovative theatrical production that highlights the representation and empowerment of wāhine Māori in the performing arts. This show was developed in response to criticisms about the lack of women’s voices on the marae and aims to bridge a significant gap in cultural education while celebrating the rich narratives of Māori women.
“Gazing into the smiling eyes of a wāhine Māori who has been told far too often where her place is—yet knows it isn’t confined to one spot but exists at the front, the side, the back, and everywhere in between… We cover all angles!”
Kōpū will be performed as a Christmas Special at Te Pou Theatre. This production celebrates and acknowledges Māori voices, fostering connections with the theatre and providing access to high-quality Māori art, ultimately contributing to a vibrant creative economy in Henderson.
