RubUrban is a fluid collective of artists led by Cath O’Brien, working with local communities to connect with their physical environments and one another through the process of walking together or alone. Using the process of frottage or rubbing they will work with local communities to create ‘urban prints’ of their local environments.
Each workshop will introduce the concept of rubbing by demonstrating the art and providing a rubbing kit of recycled papers, crayons and pencils for taking the rubbings. The attendees will be provided with a map of interesting spots to rub and collect the prints. RubUrban will photograph the collection for instagram/social media and the production of a zine for each area we visit. Copies will be provided for the library and the art centre.
The Objectives
RubUrban is working with local communities to connect with their physical environments and one another through the activity of walking. Using the process of frottage or rubbing we will work with local communities to create ‘urban prints’ of their local environments.
We are asking people in the community to observe things to rub when they are out walking in the neighbourhood. There are so many beautiful parks and reserves in Massey. If you find something interesting take a rubbing and email it to us at cathosster@gmail.com. We are collecting the images for a pop up exhibition (details of date and venue at a later date) to share on instagram and to collate into a zine format for the local libraries.
Please visit @rub_urban for more examples.
Have fun out there but please remember to stay safe while out in the streets and parks collecting any rubbings.
