This project is centred around Polaroid photographs showing off the ethnic diversity of the Henderson-Massey population, with the following goals:
• To unite the community through art
• To encourage people to reflect on multiculturalism, globalisation, identity, nurture and appropriation.
• Help educate each other on imagery that we and our neighbours of different heritages / beliefs / sexualities might formally or informally associated with, and get some conversations started about heritage, identity, uniqueness and sameness.
So far there are over 50 community members involved in the portrait project, with more portraits planned for the future. There is a dedicated Instagram account, which has been viewed by a large audience, and continues to grow with an active and engaged following.
While this project is still only in its early stages, the project lead Nadia, is looking to keep this going indefinitely and is also keen to create a walk-in booth in the future, which locals can pass through for an instant photo.
Nadia Hammoud grew up in a large multicultural community. She is of Berber origin (North African), was born in London and moved to Aotearoa in her late twenties. She lives in Henderson and is a big supporter of local arts initiatives.
