This film is an insight into Edith’s mahi of empowering children by teaching them how to tell stories and express themselves through using a camera.
Edith Amituanai is a Samoan photographer and youth worker based in Ranui. This short documentary will follow a Year Ten art class that Edith is co-teaching at Waitakere College. The students are making masks then recording the character they create through film and photography. This is a collaborative documentary, involving the students at Waitakere College in the creation of the film. By allowing them to record the process of making their masks, letting them interview Edith and interviewing them, we will gain insight into how they see Edith as an artist and teacher.
The key words of this documentary are consent and respect. How does Edith feel about the role of consent in her work? How does she gain respect from the rangatahi she works with?
The documentary is a diverse, youth focused story for different generations to enjoy. Documentary is an accessible way for a wide audience to engage with Edith’s work when the film is released publicly.
When the documentary is completed there will be a private screening with everyone involved and their whānau. The film will go on to be entered into international and national film festivals such as Sundance, Berlinale, imagineNATIVE, Doc Edge and Show Me Shorts. It will then be made available online for the wider public to enjoy.
