Kākano Youth Arts Collective – Exhibition

This project will support the Kākano Youth Arts Collective Exhibition, showcasing the incredible work of the rangatahi involved in the program. An Exhibition Coordinator will oversee the production of the artwork and manage all aspects of the exhibition delivery.

The exhibition will be held at Corban Estate Arts Centre, making it accessible for the entire community to come together and celebrate the achievements of these young people. All artwork will be available for sale, with 80% of the proceeds going directly back to the artists.

About

Kākano Youth Arts Collective is a unique, hands-on arts program that works with some of the most vulnerable rangatahi in West Auckland. Based at Corban Estate Arts Centre, Kākano was developed as a pilot program in response to the significant needs of young people facing challenging circumstances.

Kākano provides a safe, creative space for rangatahi who have been excluded from mainstream education and often have a history of offending. Many of these young people left school as early as age 13, with some as young as 10. Through three weekly studio sessions, Kākano supports approximately 18 rangatahi aged 13–22, helping them develop their art practice, confidence, and self-worth.

The program works closely with Oranga Tamariki, Police, Alternative Education Providers, Youth Services, and Local Government to collectively address the barriers these young people face. Under the guidance of practicing multi-disciplinary artist tutors, Kākano empowers rangatahi to transform their lives through art.

“All of our young people have been excluded from mainstream education, and many have a long history of offending. At school, they were disengaged, disruptive, and often the cause of issues in the classroom. Through Kākano, they’ve found a place to belong, grow, and thrive.”
